There's something I like about being in an empty place. Not just a place without people, such as remote wilderness, but a place that is "supposed" to have people in it but doesn't. Nature is pushed aside to create spaces for people, and when people are not in that space, it feels like a being in a vacuum. To illustrate further, imagine walking through the woods and coming upon abandoned structure of some kind. There were no people in the forest before, but now their absence creates a different kind of eeriness.
Working on campus during the summer in grad school was a treat in this regard. I quite enjoyed walking around and having the buildings looming over. Sometimes I would take my lunch to one of the seating areas in another building and eat there. The library was another favorite spot, although it was usually relatively empty outside of finals week.
