My guiding principle is to make a site I would enjoy perusing. I like sites that one can stumble upon and
get lost in. More traditional blog/portfolio sites that I've made have left me with a "that's it?" feeling
when visiting them.
Other Principles
Low Friction:
I want to focus on writing things for the site rather than writing code to make the site work.
Bi-Directional Links:
it is interesting to not only see where you can go from a given page, but from what pages one can arrive at the current one. I wish more sites had backlinks, so I implemented them for mine.
Non-completionism:
I don't wait for a page to be fully finished before publishing. I will even publish a page that's just a title to be filled in later. This helps curb
perfectionist
tendencies.
Non-linear:
There is no prescribed order to visit pages in, I want visitors to arrive on the homepage and pick one of many entry points, and from there follow whichever links or backlinks seem most interesting
